Dr. Guy Stiebel | ד”ר גיא שטיבל

Expedition Director

Dr. Guy D. Stiebel is a senior lecturer in Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Cultures, Tel Aviv University, Israel and the Head of the archaeological expedition to the World Heritage site: Masada.

He earned his PhD at UCL for the study of militaria in Roman Palestine and held a post-doctorate position in the Hebrew University for the study of the realia of the Dead-Sea War Scroll. Stiebel has published extensively on military archaeology and history, the interface between text and matter and the archaeology of Jerusalem. Stiebel co-edited in the past decade the scientific series New Studies in the Archaeology of Jerusalem and Its Region and the book: Roman Jerusalem: A New Old City (JRA Supplementary). His monograph Arms, Men and Society in Roman Judaea is due in 2020 (T&T Clark, Bloomsbury).

As the Head of the Neustadter Family archaeological expedition to Masada he returned in 2017 to the field. The new discoveries, most notably the horticulture and viniculture of King Herod, were recognized by the Third Shanghai Archaeological Forum, being awarded one of the 10 World discoveries in Archaeology.

Stiebel was recently nominated by Israel’s Minister of Culture as the Chair of the Israel Archaeological Council.

Boaz Gross | בועז גרוס

Field Director

Boaz Gross is a PhD candidate at Tel Aviv University, researching the development of public archaeology in the State of Israel.
He is the Vice President of Israeli Institute of Archaeology and the Director of the salvage excavations at Tel Beit Shemesh. 
He is married and has three boys. He lives in Tel Aviv. 


Nurit Rozenfeld | נורית רוזנפלד

Registrar

Nurit is originally from Kfar Warburg and currently lives in London. Nurit has a BA in Archaelogy and Art History from the Tel Aviv University and has taken part in the Tel Azeka digs both as an excavator her first time, and as a staff member and Assistant Registrar her second time. Today, Nurit is the Assistant Registrar at the Tel Beit Shemesh-East excavations and will be the Registrar of this Masada excavation.


Josh Errington | ג’וש ארינגטון

Surveyor

Joshua Errington is from Perth, Australia and is a PhD candidate at Macquarie University in Sydney. He is researching the site formation of the City of David ridge, Jerusalem. Once a Tel Aviv University MA student, Joshua has been part of the Masada Expedition since the first season and serves as surveyor.


Angela Hodson | אנג’לה הודסון

Administrator & Area Supervisor

Angela is from Edmonton, Canada. She graduated from MacEwan University with a BA in Anthropology, and in 2020 submitted her MA thesis at Tel Aviv University on Public Monumental Buildings in the Second Temple Period in Rural Judaea. She has excavated in Canada and across Israel. She was also an area manager at Tel Beit Shemesh-East. In 2017, Angela joined the Masada Expedition as an excavator. In 2019, she joined the Masada Expedition as part of the administrative team and as supervisor of Area G, northwest of the mountain. In the 2020-2021 seasons, Angela was the supervisor of Area B.


Heidi Maynard | היידי מיינרד

Heidi is from Plymouth, England. She has been coming to Israel since 2014 for archaeological excavations. Heidi is currently in her second year at Tel Aviv University and working on her MA thesis, Stucco from Herods time in 3D. She first joined the Masada family in 2018 as a volunteer, since 2019 she has supervised excavations inside the ❄️’snow’❄️ cave (Area C).


Rikki Zalut Har-Tuv | ריקי זלוט הר-טוב

Area Supervisor

Rikki Zalut Har-Tuv in 2019

Rikki is originally from Efrat and currently lives in Jerusalem. She is a MA student in Archaeology at TAU, and when she is not there she is excavating at the “Pilgrimage Road” excavation in the City of David, Jerusalem. Rikki is interested in Roman archaeology of the land of Israel, and will hopefully be writing her thesis about the rebels and refugees of Masada during the great revolt. This will be her fourth season at Masada, and her second year as supervisor of Area A.


Yotam Roten | יותם רוטן

Area Assistant

Yotam Roten in 2019

Yotam is a BA student at Tel Aviv University. He was born in Paris but grew up in Jerusalem 🇮🇱🇫🇷. He is an archaeologist by day, a cocktails mixologist by night, and a basketball fanatic at all times. He is passionate about so many things but in particular the classical world and Jerusalem’s ancient history. Yotam joined the Masada expedition last year as an excavator and in 2020-2021 he was the assistant in Area B.
